Hello,

Thanks for wanting to know more about me.

My mammy taught me to knit when I was a little girl. Maybe because of her gentle influence and nostalgia over seeing her knit amazing things that were all the rage in the Sixties like Lopi, Fair Isle and Arran jumpers knitting is sublimely comforting to me.

I dabble in cross-stitch, painting, sewing - can’t get the hang of crochet at all. I swing off for weeks into intense scrapbooking phases – usually making altered books for friends. But I always come back to my first love, my fingers twitching to hold some needles and yarn and knit anything, anything!

I have a constantly evolving supply of different yarns – it’s a bit like having a pantry full of food.

I like birch and bamboo knitting needles, very popular at the moment with new knitters. But I really like my ancient rhodo-crystal plastic ones which come in funny pearly pastel colours. They are a nice warm plastic. I must have extra long needles to stick under my oxter (arm) for leverage.

For years I made original baby clothes for friends and family and now I have become addicted to creating original creatures. When I’m knitting my little girl says, “is that pony/ whale/ hedgehog/ slug/ donkey/ pig/ cat for me mama?” and is so adorably sweet when I say, “em no, darling you already have a hundred ponies/ whales/ hedgehogs/ slugs/ donkeys/ pigs/ cats”.

My daughter absolutely loves these toys. It is mind-expandingly inspiring to me that a length of mohair, cotton, wool or satin ribbon can artfully become a simple toy that is so cherished and takes part in so many interesting adventures in a child’s hands.

I do not do faces on my creatures because a) I’m not that great at embroidery and might ruin the whole thing and b) I am zealous about the idea of the child being free to choose the expression and face in their imagination instead of having to work with a fixed happy/sad etc expression toy.

I hope you and your little one loves their Lullaby Lily creations as we do. Love to you.
